Jon Hassell’s first posthumous album arrives October 2

Ndeya, the label founded by the late Jon Hassell, will release the composer’s first posthumous album of new music on October 2, according to Pitchfork. The record is titled Music Is Invisible (Pentimento Volume Three).

The new album will finish Hassell’s final trilogy, following Listening to Pictures from 2018 and Seeing Through Sound from 2020. It features Hassell performing in a trio with Rick Cox and John von Seggern.

According to the release, the music was recorded on May 23, 2015, at St John at Hackney Church in London. That performance became Hassell’s final live appearance.

The four-track album was edited and mixed by Jeff Rona, who worked to shape the live recording beyond a standard soundboard capture. Hassell died in 2021 at age 84 after long-term health issues and natural causes, and he was widely known for developing the “Fourth World” sound he described as blending world music traditions with electronic techniques.
