Beatport has announced that it will ban songs that are fully or mostly created by artificial intelligence, according to NME. The online music store and streaming platform said the policy update is intended to make its catalog clearer for users and better reflect how music is made.
Under the new rules, songs that use AI assistance can still be uploaded, but only if the finished track remains mostly human-made. Those tracks will be labeled during ingestion so Beatport’s curation team can review them with more context.
Beatport also said that tracks rejected under the new policy will lead to rights holders being notified directly. The company added that it is expanding its partnership with detection specialist Beatdapp to improve its ability to identify automated music.
In a statement, Beatport CEO Matt Gralen said the platform is meant to support DJs, artists and labels, and that it sees a difference between tools that assist human creativity and systems that replace it. Co-founder and co-CEO Andrew Batey said the upgraded Beatdapp partnership should create greater transparency while still protecting human creativity.
Beatport said the change follows user feedback, including a survey that found 77% of users prefer supporting human creators and 60% would refuse to listen to AI-generated songs. Other services, including Apple Music, TIDAL, Deezer, Bandcamp, SoundCloud and Spotify, have also moved to label, limit or otherwise address AI-made music.
