The Beach Boys have canceled their remaining summer concerts, nearly 30 dates in all, so frontman Mike Love can “recharge,” according to Rolling Stone.
The band said in a statement on Love’s official Instagram page that the group has enjoyed performing this summer, including shows tied to the 60th anniversary of Pet Sounds and the 250th anniversary of the United States. The message said they are taking a short break before returning to the road in September.
The move follows a stretch of shows marked by some cancellations tied to Love’s health issues and reports that the 85-year-old has been having difficulty onstage. Earlier this year, Bruce Johnston retired, leaving Love as the last remaining classic-era Beach Boy in the touring lineup.
The Beach Boys are currently scheduled to resume touring Sept. 24 at the Big E Arena in Springfield, Massachusetts. According to Rolling Stone, the group is trying to reschedule as many dates as possible, while some have been canceled outright. Al Jardine and the Pet Sounds Band filled in for the Beach Boys at the Oregon State Fair on Aug. 29.
