Ariana Grande is teasing a more raw and experimental side of herself on her new album, Petal. In a new Apple Music clip posted Wednesday, the singer said the project was created from a place of “unfiltered rage,” according to Billboard.
Grande said she was excited for listeners to hear all 12 tracks, but especially interested in how they respond to the full album. She explained that the music draws from several parts of her personality while also sounding different from what she has done before.
“I usually am too shy to tap into that,” Grande said in the clip. She added that she normally revises lyrics to make them “a little kinder,” but said that time she did not filter herself as much.
Billboard notes that Grande had already hinted in May that Petal would have a more intense edge. The full album is set to arrive Friday, July 31, following several preview clips that include blunt lyrics and references to fame and public scrutiny.
