Alexander Skarsgård is getting attention for a dramatic makeover in the first trailer for his new film Wicker, according to E! News. In the movie, he plays the Wicker Husband, a character created for Olivia Colman’s Fisherwoman after she asks the town’s Basketmaker, played by Peter Dinklage, for a husband.
The trailer shows Skarsgård’s entire face and body covered in wicker, turning him into a fully woven version of the role. Skarsgård told Entertainment Weekly that the part fulfilled a dream he never knew he had, saying he always wanted “nipples made out of wicker,” and credited the film’s directors and the artists at Weta in New Zealand for making it happen.
Directors Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer told EW that Skarsgård’s prosthetic look and performance worked together to sell the character. They said that once he was moving and speaking as the Wicker Husband, they knew the film’s romance and spectacle were in good hands.
Colman also praised Skarsgård’s transformation, calling him “breathtaking” in the wicker costume. Wicker, which is adapted from Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story “The Wicker Husband,” opens in select theaters on Oct. 23 and expands to a wider release on Oct. 30.
