Al Jardine dusted off a long-absent Beach Boys song during a recent concert in Ohio, according to Rolling Stone. The performance took place on Aug. 15 at the Robins Theater in Warren with the Pet Sounds Band.
As Jardine introduced the encore, he told the crowd they were about to hear something they had never experienced before. He said he believed he had last performed the song with the Beach Boys in the 1970s, and added that the one-off rehearsal that day was tied to “coming back to Ohio.”
The song was “Back Home,” a deep cut that references returning to Ohio. Rolling Stone notes that the track has a complicated history, with early versions dating back to the 1960s and later Beach Boys recordings in the 1970s before it was officially released in 1976.
According to Rolling Stone, “Back Home” had disappeared from the live set list for decades before Jardine revived it in Ohio. Jardine has also been performing other overlooked Beach Boys songs recently, while Mike Love has paused his own tour dates until Sept. 24.
