Workers have begun removing thousands of gallons of rotting fish sauce from an abandoned plant in Newfoundland and Labrador, according to UPI Odd News. The former Atlantic Seafood Sauce Company facility had been left unused since the early 2000s.
St. Mary’s Mayor Steve Ryan said the plant has been producing a strong smell in town for decades, telling The New York Times it was like “the worst rotten fish” smell multiplied many times over. He said the long-delayed cleanup has finally moved forward after years of debate over which level of government was responsible.
The Newfoundland and Labrador government approved a $2 million budget for the cleanup last year. Crews began the work on Tuesday, and officials said 110 tanks, each holding 3,000 gallons of rotten sauce, are being emptied.
Sharp Management is handling the operation by cutting open the tanks and mixing the contents with peat moss to harden the material for transport. The waste will then go to a specialized cell designed to keep odors from escaping, and the project is expected to be completed by October.
