An Indiana zoo temporarily evacuated its African exhibit after a recently arrived wildebeest was found in the wrong habitat, according to UPI Odd News.
The Fort Wayne Zoo said a staff member spotted the animal on Friday afternoon after it had left its enclosure and moved into an adjacent habitat. Officials believe the wildebeest crossed a shared pond area to get there.
To keep the animal calm while the situation was handled, the zoo cleared the African Journey exhibit. The zoo said its team was able to secure the area and guide the wildebeest back safely.
Michelle Smurl, vice president of animal care and conservation education, told WANE-TV that the response was exactly what the staff trains for. She said the incident was resolved safely for both guests and the animals in the zoo’s care.
