Hair shedding can seem worse in the summer, and according to E! News, a trichologist says a mix of seasonal changes and summer habits may be to blame.
Tina Mui, a trichologist, master stylist and co-founder of AWARE Hair, told the outlet that researchers are still studying why more hairs may enter the resting phase during warmer months. She said studies have found a slightly larger share of scalp hairs can shift into that phase in summer, with shedding often becoming more noticeable near the end of summer and into fall.
Mui said summer heat itself is not causing healthy follicles to suddenly drop hair. Instead, she pointed to factors like sweat, oil, sunscreen, dry shampoo, saltwater and chlorine, which can weigh down roots and make hair look thinner or less lifted.
She also said scalp care matters because buildup can affect how hair looks and feels. Mui advised using a gentle approach to scalp stimulation, avoiding scratching with nails, and watching for changes in the scalp that keep coming back or do not improve with a normal routine.
