Maricopa families will have another chance to learn lifesaving water safety skills later this month as Water Safety Day returns to Copper Sky Aquatic Center. The free event is set for 10 a.m. on July 25, according to InMaricopa.
The event is hosted by the Maricopa Water Safety Coalition in partnership with the Maricopa Fire and Medical Department, Maricopa Police Department and Copper Sky lifeguards. Officials said it will include drowning prevention training, CPR demonstrations and a mock water rescue.
According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, drowning remains the leading cause of death for Arizona children ages 1 to 4. The state’s 2024 Child Fatality Review reported 36 drowning deaths, which was nearly 16% higher than the year before, and three-quarters of those children were younger than 5.
The event will begin with a sensory-friendly hour from 10 to 11 a.m. that features pool-free interactive activities, including CPR demonstrations. The first 10 guests will receive a free drowning prevention bag donated by Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and there will also be safety booths and a raffle for life vests and fittings sponsored by the Arizona Game & Fish Department and the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona.
Maricopa fire officials have long stressed that adult supervision, pool barriers, swim lessons and life jackets are among the strongest protections against drowning.
