An Ohio shelter kitten that drew attention online for a homemade wheelchair now has a custom 3D-printed set of wheels, according to UPI Odd News.
The kitten, named Gelato, arrived at Cincinnati Animal CARE with a spinal injury that left his back legs too weak to hold his weight. Veterinary technician Mallory Smith first built a mobility aid for him using rulers, Hot Wheels cars, cardboard, zip ties and tape.
The shelter said Gelato’s viral story helped lead to the new wheelchair, which was designed to fit his needs more closely. On social media, Cincinnati Animal CARE said the response showed what community support can do for animals in need.
Veterinarians hope the new wheels will help Gelato build enough strength in his back legs that he can eventually stand and walk on his own.
