UCLA scientists have developed a mineral sunscreen formula that leaves far less of the pale, chalky residue many people dislike, according to ScienceDaily.
The research team changed the shape of zinc oxide particles rather than introducing a new ingredient. They engineered the material into tiny four-armed structures called tetrapods, which they say still provide strong protection against ultraviolet radiation.
In tests, the tetrapod-based sunscreen reached an SPF of about 30 when used at the same concentration as conventional zinc oxide formulas. The researchers also found that the product was more stable over time and produced a warmer appearance that better matched natural skin tones.
According to the study authors, the findings could help make mineral sunscreen more appealing and support skin cancer prevention by encouraging more consistent use. The work was published in ACS Materials Letters.
Senior author Paul S. Weiss said improving how sunscreen looks could have real public health value if it leads to more regular use. First author AJ Addae said the project grew out of frustration with the white cast mineral sunscreen left on their own skin.
