Offset will avoid jail time for now after a Los Angeles judge approved his request for a diversion program in a misdemeanor assault case, according to Rolling Stone. The case stems from an altercation with a security guard at a marijuana dispensary near LAX airport.
Under the terms of the agreement, the charge will be dismissed if the rapper, whose legal name is Kiari Cephus, completes 50 hours of community service, finishes an anger management program, and stays out of further legal trouble for 12 months.
Cephus had asked for a six-month diversion period, but the judge extended it to a full year during a July 15 hearing that he did not attend. Prosecutors had opposed diversion and wanted the case to move ahead to trial.
According to filings cited by Rolling Stone, prosecutors said Cephus refused to show identification at the MedMen dispensary on March 13, 2025, and repeated, “Do you know who I am?” They said he pushed the guard and punched him once in the cheek before leaving after the guard used pepper spray.
Cephus’ lawyer called the incident “embarrassing and regretful” and said he has kept a clean record since then. The security guard, Jim Leobardo Sanchez, has also filed a civil lawsuit, and a hearing in that case is scheduled for Aug. 5.
