Tom Morello has announced that his mother, Mary Morello, has died at the age of 102, according to NME. The Rage Against The Machine guitarist shared the news on social media on Sunday night, July 12.
In his post, Morello wrote, “Mary Morello is forever with the Rebels of Light & Song. (1923-2026).” The message prompted condolences from fans and fellow musicians across the industry.
Tributes also came from artists including Garbage’s Shirley Manson, System Of A Down’s Serj Tankian, Metallica, Nikki Sixx, Nova Twins, and DJ Premier. Several of them remembered Mary Morello as an inspiration and sent love to Tom and his family.
According to NME, Morello had recently canceled festival appearances and postponed other shows while heading home to help care for his mother. He had previously said she was 102 and dealing with health issues, but that her resilience had led him back “into the fray.”
NME also noted that Mary Morello’s activism and volunteer work influenced her son’s political outlook and, in turn, his music.
