The Michael Jackson biopic Michael has become the first film in the biopic genre to pass $1 billion at the global box office, according to NME.
The movie stars Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, as the late singer and traces his life from his early days with the Jackson 5 through the Bad world tour in the late 1980s.
Before reaching the $1 billion mark, the film had already set records by posting the biggest opening weekend ever for a biopic and becoming the highest-grossing biopic of all time, surpassing Oppenheimer.
Director Antoine Fuqua called the milestone humbling and thanked the film’s cast, crew, producers, partners and audiences around the world. NME also reports that a sequel is in development, though it may not continue directly from the first film’s ending.
