Hershberger said photos from places like Instagram or Vogue can help show the exact look you want, whether that’s a French bob or a sleeker ’90s-inspired version. She also advised being specific about where you want the cut to land, since a bob at the chin can look very different from one that hits just below the chin or brushes the shoulders.
Speaking to E! News, Hershberger said a good stylist will adapt the haircut to your face shape and natural texture. She described the goal as customizing the shape so it flatters your features and works with how your hair naturally falls.
Hershberger also shared styling advice for different hair types. For straight bobs, she suggested products that add shine without weighing hair down, while curly bobs can benefit from hydration and frizz control. For fine hair, she said texture spray can help create volume and movement.
She added that the awkward in-between stage of growing hair out can still look stylish if it’s shaped and worn well. Hershberger said adding waves can help give the hair movement and make grow-out lines less noticeable.
