‘The Odyssey’ earns $87 million in second weekend, besting Nolan’s past films

“The Odyssey” continued its strong run at the box office in its second weekend in North American theaters, taking in $87 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates reported by ABC News.

That total marked only a 30% drop from its opening weekend, a relatively small decline for a major release. It also gave Christopher Nolan his best second weekend performance to date, surpassing the $75.2 million earned by “The Dark Knight” in 2008, not adjusted for inflation.

The film added another $128.3 million from international markets, bringing its estimated worldwide total to $639.6 million. Theater chains around the world are adding showtimes to keep up with demand, according to Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak.

Large-format screens continue to drive much of the movie’s business. IMAX alone accounted for $48 million of the global total this weekend, while 70 mm IMAX showings brought in $5.2 million. Other top titles included Disney’s “Moana” with $10.5 million and “Toy Story 5” with $10 million.

Overall, the summer box office has topped $3 billion and is running about 10% ahead of last year, according to the report.
