Taron Egerton is opening up about his strained relationship with his father, David Egerton. During an Aug. 10 appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, the Rocketman star said the two are not in contact and have not spoken in several years, according to E! News.
Egerton said the pair once had what he described as a “fairly functional relationship,” but that things later got more difficult. He said he does not want to share too much about his father’s private life, though he added that he will always love him.
The 36-year-old actor said he believes their relationship simply does not work well, and recalled a point when he stepped away from it completely. He also said that with more life experience, he has come to better understand his father and give him more grace.
Egerton reflected on his parents being very young when he was born and said he can understand his father’s experience of trying to be a good parent. He also spoke warmly about his mother, Christine, saying he never felt he lacked anything growing up, and praised his Kingsman co-star Colin Firth as a supportive father figure in Hollywood.
