AI music generator Suno has lost a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by German licensing agency GEMA, according to NME.
The case, filed in January 2025, alleged that Suno used songs in GEMA’s repertoire, including Boney M’s “Daddy Cool,” Lou Bega’s “Mambo No. 5” and Alphaville’s “Forever Young,” to train its AI models without licenses or payment to the songwriters.
A Munich Regional Court ruled on Friday, July 31, that Suno unlawfully obtained, processed and reproduced music represented by GEMA. The court said the company’s use of the songs violated both German and U.S. copyright law.
Suno will have to pay damages to GEMA, though the amount has not yet been announced. The ruling also means other AI companies will need to license music from GEMA’s catalog going forward.
Following the decision, GEMA said it marked an important victory for creators’ rights, while Suno said it does not agree with the ruling and is considering an appeal.
