Frank Zappa’s ‘Freak Out!’ gets 60th anniversary reissue with rare mono mix

Frank Zappa’s estate will release a 60th anniversary edition of The Mothers of Invention’s debut album Freak Out! on Sept. 25, according to Rolling Stone. The deluxe project includes a long-unavailable mono mix, a newly remastered stereo version and a pre-master mix drawn from newly uncovered 1966 tapes.

The album originally arrived in 1966 as a pioneering double LP, and Paul McCartney has said it helped inspire the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The new release revisits that record in multiple formats while preserving its original track listing.

Beyond the album mixes, the 5CD/1Blu-ray set adds material from the band’s era at the Fillmore West, including portions of three 1966 live performances. It also features rehearsal tape, demos, vocal reference recordings and other outtakes from the vault.

According to Rolling Stone, the reissue is available to preorder in several editions, including a Super Deluxe package, a 5LP version and a 2LP colored vinyl pressing. The Super Deluxe editions also include a lithograph, a 26-page booklet and new essays and photos from the archive.
