Spotify says it will begin marking artist profiles that feature music generated with artificial intelligence with new “AI Persona” badges, according to Rolling Stone.
The policy is set to take effect in mid-September, but people behind AI artists can start self-disclosing today, Aug. 11. If they do not, Spotify said it will review profiles, identify those that fit the policy and apply the badge itself.
Profiles with the AI Persona label will also be excluded from Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations. The music can still appear in personalized recommendations if a user already follows that artist.
Spotify said it will look for profiles using “photorealistic AI-generated identities” and focus on artists that meet audience thresholds so the labels cover most profiles users visit. The badge will show on artist pages, in search results and on playlist track rows, and users will be able to see whether the disclosure came from the artist or from Spotify’s review. Artists can also appeal if they believe the badge was applied by mistake.
The company said the move is meant to address listener concerns about profiles that appear human but are actually AI-generated. Spotify has already faced criticism over some of its AI-related tools, including an incident in July when Lorde said the platform’s “About the Song” feature appeared to generate false information about her track “Current Affairs.”
