A brush fire burning near Maricopa Meadows grew to about 2 acres Thursday and is now being called the Smith Fire, according to InMaricopa.
The fire started on Ak-Chin Indian Community land and later moved into Maricopa jurisdiction, where the Maricopa Fire/Medical Department was working to contain it. It was reported around 12:24 a.m. near Smith Wash, just south of McDavid Road.
Officials said the fire is about three-quarters of a mile west of the Maricopa neighborhood. Maricopa Fire/Medical Department also provided mutual aid to the Ak-Chin Fire Department earlier in the day before the blaze crossed into Maricopa.
No buildings are currently threatened, according to MFMD. Watch Duty had not listed any containment information as of Thursday afternoon.
Residents in Maricopa Meadows said they could see smoke from the fire and smell it in the neighborhood as it drifted beyond the nearby farm fields.
