Storm sparks brush fire and outages in the Maricopa area

A storm overnight Wednesday brought a brush fire and power outages to the Maricopa area, according to InMaricopa.

Fire crews reported a half-acre brush fire around 12:24 a.m. Thursday on the Ak-Chin Indian Community near Smith Wash, just south of McDavid Road. Maricopa Fire/Medical Department assisted with mutual aid, and an MFMD firefighter said Ak-Chin Fire Department would keep an eye on the fire and allow it to burn out.

Officials did not confirm what started the fire. InMaricopa reported that a power outage began around 11:30 p.m., with residents in Senita, Santa Rosa Springs, Desert Passage and parts of Glennwilde affected.

Electrical District No. 3’s outage map showed about 8,400 customers without power for roughly 30 minutes, with smaller outages continuing through the night. The University of Arizona’s Maricopa station recorded wind gusts above 46 mph and about 0.18 inches of rain.

Weather is expected to stay hot and dry through the rest of the week, with an extreme heat warning in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday.
