A joint law-enforcement task force is stepping up the search for Bonnie Bickwit and Mitchel Weiser, the Brooklyn teens who disappeared more than 50 years ago while heading to the 1973 Summer Jam concert in upstate New York, according to Rolling Stone.
The group, led by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police, recently carried out an excavation at an abandoned power company property in Steuben County. Investigators were looking for possible remains connected to the case.
Authorities are also reviewing a new tip from someone who says they have information about the teens’ travels after they began hitchhiking to the concert on July 27, 1973. Officials have not released details about the tip in order to protect the investigation.
Bonnie was 15 and working at Camp Wel-Met in Sullivan County that summer, while Mitchel, 16, was working as a photographer’s assistant in Brooklyn. The two were students at John Dewey High School and are believed to have disappeared on July 27 or 28.
The excavation was prompted by earlier tips and followed ground-penetrating radar work that identified two underground anomalies, which later turned out to be large stones. State police said the search did not produce any results, but investigators said they remain committed to following leads and asked anyone with information to contact law enforcement.
