Rick Moranis received a standing ovation Friday at Comic-Con International in San Diego as fans reacted to his return for the long-awaited “Spaceballs” sequel, according to ABC News.
The 73-year-old actor joined a Hall H panel to promote “Spaceballs: The New One,” which is set for release next April. Moranis is returning as Dark Helmet in the follow-up to the 1987 cult comedy.
When his name was announced, Moranis briefly appeared hidden in the crowd beneath his character’s oversized helmet while performers dressed as soldiers searched for him with an oversized comb, ABC News reported.
Moranis told the audience the project “came along at the right time” and said it felt like “the best decision I ever made,” adding that the film feels like family to him. He was joined on stage by Daphne Zuniga, director Josh Greenbaum, writer and actor Josh Gad, writers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, and new cast members Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman.
Fans also saw behind-the-scenes footage and a teaser trailer. Gad said he plays a mawg, but not Barf, the character originally played by John Candy, and said the sequel will honor original cast members who have died.
