Perez Hilton’s sister, Barbara Lavandeira, is speaking publicly about the day the blogger was hospitalized after engaging in self-harm during an Aug. 4 livestream, according to E! News.
In an interview with Page Six published Aug. 13, Lavandeira said she became concerned when Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira Jr., stopped responding to her while he was in his bedroom with the door closed and locked. She said she unlocked the door and went into the bathroom, where she found him injured and holding a box cutter.
Lavandeira said she did not recognize her brother in that moment and described his condition as deeply alarming. She said she left the Miami home with Hilton’s three children, ages 8 to 13, called 911, and asked a friend to take the children away from the scene.
She added that she later returned to the house while waiting for an ambulance and placed towels over Hilton to help slow the bleeding. Lavandeira said she decided to share her account because her brother is a public figure and because of what she described as false reporting and rumors surrounding the incident.
Hilton remains hospitalized, and his mother, Teresita Lavandeira, has filed for temporary custody of his children. According to Miami court documents obtained by multiple outlets, Hilton voluntarily agreed to the request, which gives his mother authority over the children’s medical, dental, and educational decisions while he recovers.
