Orville Peck has released a new single called “Already Gone,” which appears on his upcoming album Mule, due Sept. 18 through Warner Records, according to Rolling Stone.
The track was produced by Jay Joyce and co-written by Peck and Jacob Portrait. It also features Peck’s five-piece band, along with contributions from Molly Tuttle, Ketch Secor, and Ry Jennings.
In a statement, Peck said the song comes early in the album’s storyline, when he first enters rehab. He said he agreed to get treatment but still believed he did not have a problem, and described the video as showing the gap between that mindset and the reality of what he was going through.
The music video, directed by Austin Peters, shows Peck inside a rehab facility and includes group sessions, therapy, medication, and a tearful departure. Noah Cyrus, Allison Russel, and Cathy Cooper also appear again in recurring roles as figures from Peck’s imagination.
Mule follows the worst year of Peck’s life, according to Rolling Stone, including a breakup, addiction, rehab, sobriety, and a confrontation with both his public image and private struggles. Peck also said he has spoken about being in a very dark place, including a suicide attempt during that period.
