Pavement have been working through a short summer tour across the United States, and one stop brought out a long-lost song. According to Stereogum, the band performed “Greenlander” in Cleveland last Thursday for the first time in 34 years.
“Greenlander” first appeared as an outtake from the 1992 Watery, Domestic EP and later turned up on the 1993 charity compilation Born To Choose and on Slanted & Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe. While Stephen Malkmus played the song at a couple of solo shows last year, Pavement had not performed it together in more than three decades.
The Cleveland show at the Agora Ballroom also included part of Pink Floyd’s “Lucifer Sam” after “Half A Canyon.” Stereogum noted that the full-show footage shows “Greenlander” at about the 54-minute mark and “Lucifer Sam” around an hour and four minutes in.
Pavement later played Philadelphia and Richmond, where they again performed “Greenlander” and brought back a bit of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” The band will finish the tour with two shows at the Ryman in Nashville and is also set to appear at the Shaky Knees festival in Atlanta on Sept. 19.
