Content creators, including Paige Lorenze, are criticizing Four Winds Craft Guild, an antiques shop in Nantucket, Massachusetts, after it put up a sign that read “No Influencers,” according to E! News.
Lorenze, who recently opened a boutique nearby, reacted to a now-deleted Instagram photo of the sign by questioning whether the message was aimed at delegitimizing women in a growing industry. She said the creator economy is largely driven by women and argued that the sign sent the wrong message.
Other social media figures also weighed in. Wishbone Kitchen’s Meredith Hayden called the sign “icky,” while TikToker Levi Coralynn said hating influencers has become an acceptable way to hate women. Not everyone objected, however. Blogger Erin Gates said she understood the frustration with influencer culture and described the sign as funny.
Shop owner John Sylvia told The Cut that the sign was meant as a joke and said he is not anti-influencer. He said it was directed at visitors who focus on making content instead of learning about the history of the items in the store, including lightship baskets that have been part of Nantucket’s history since the 1800s.
