Morrissey and Johnny Marr have both helped create a rare new seven-inch release from The Smiths, which will appear in an upcoming Rough Trade boxset, according to NME.
The release is part of Rough Trade 45s: Volume 2, due out on October 30. The limited edition boxset will include singles from artists such as The Fall, Aztec Camera, Mazzy Star, Scritti Politti, Robert Wyatt and others, and only 1,000 copies will be made.
The Smiths’ contribution features “The Headmaster Ritual” on one side and “I Want The One I Can’t Have” on the other. Both songs originally appeared on the band’s 1985 album Meat Is Murder, but they were never issued as a Rough Trade single before now.
According to NME, both Morrissey and Marr requested the tracks for the release. Morrissey also chose the artwork, selecting a 1939 image of American actor Billy Halop, while both musicians wrote sleeve notes for the boxset.
The package also includes writing from Elvis Costello, Stewart Lee, Green Gartside, Jonathan Richman and Robert Forster, along with a new interview with Rough Trade co-directors Geoff Travis and Jeannette Lee and photography from Anton Corbijn and others.
