The government of Alberta is urging residents not to release pet goldfish into lakes, rivers, or other waterways, according to UPI Odd News.
The province launched its “Don’t Let It Loose” campaign after more than 100 incidents of invasive goldfish were reported in Alberta waterways. Alberta invasive species specialist Nicole Kimmel told CBC News that the fish are being intentionally dumped, not flushed into the water system.
Kimmel said the goldfish are surviving the winter, reproducing, and spreading in Alberta waters. She also warned that releasing them can introduce other problems, including snails, fish disease, and plant fragments that can harm a water body.
Officials said people who release invasive species can face fines of up to $70,900 and up to a year in prison. The Alberta Ministry of the Environment said some of the goldfish found in the province have grown as long as 15 inches and can outcompete native species for habitat.
