Anna Wintour and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute have announced that the spring 2027 exhibit will be titled John Galliano: Horizons, and it will serve as the inspiration for the next Met Gala theme, according to E! News.
The celebrity co-chairs and official dress code for the event have not yet been revealed. Even so, the gala is already making history because it will only be the third time the Met Gala has honored a living designer with an exhibition, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons in 2017.
In a statement shared with Vogue, Wintour said Galliano is deeply deserving of an exhibit on this scale, pointing to his work at Dior, Givenchy, Margiela and his own label. She also said the show will not avoid the darker parts of his past and will look at the full arc of his career.
Curator Andrew Bolton said the exhibit will approach fashion as a way of mapping connections and transformations, and will explore how Galliano has reshaped the world through fashion. He also said the show will consider how Galliano’s conduct, its consequences and changing cultural values have affected the way his work is understood.
Galliano’s designs have appeared on the Met Gala carpet over the years, including Kim Kardashian’s Maison Margiela look at the 2024 event. While the 2027 gala is still ahead, the Costume Institute’s announcement has already put the spotlight on one of fashion’s most influential designers.
