Meshell Ndegeocello has announced a new album called Synonym, a collection of cover songs that brings together a wide range of artists and styles, according to Pitchfork.
The first single is a new version of Aretha Franklin and George Michael’s 1987 duet “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” performed by Ndegeocello and Cynthia Erivo.
The album’s guest list includes Cat Power, Chaka Khan, Brandi Carlile, Bill Callahan, Chris Thile, Nick Hakim, Robert Glasper, Lianne La Havas, Moses Sumney, ANOHNI, Willow, and more. Among the tracks are covers of songs including “Don’t You Want Me,” “Islands in the Stream,” “Golden Ring,” and “With God On Our Side.”
Ndegeocello said the project reflects queer liberation and the idea that different sounds can carry the same meaning. Synonym is set for release on October 2 via Blue Note.
