Melissa Auf der Maur is set to release her first new music in 15 years, according to Stereogum. The Montreal-born musician, known for her work with Hole and the Smashing Pumpkins, announced a new project titled BASS WOMB ROOM: My ’90s 4-Track Demos x Field Recordings, which arrives Sept. 4 through Envision Records.
The release includes seven previously unheard demos she recorded in the 1990s, along with eight new interludes created for her upcoming exhibit, Melissa Auf der Maur: My ’90s Rock Photographs. That show opens Sept. 2 at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Auf der Maur is also releasing a 240-page photobook with the same title. According to the announcement, it will be available Sept. 8 through DelMonico Books/D.A.P. and the AGO.
In a statement quoted by Stereogum, Auf der Maur said the songs came from a time when the music industry was pushing artists toward glossy radio hits. She described the recordings as a private, experimental side of her work, and shared a preview of the closing track, “Skip A Beat.”
Stereogum also reported that Hole appears to be teasing news for Friday, though no details have been confirmed. Fans online have speculated about a reunion tour or a reissue of the band’s 1997 compilation My Body, The Hand Grenade.
