Matthew McConaughey says a reference to Jennifer Lopez helped him get out of trouble during a border stop in Mexico years ago, according to E! News.
On the Aug. 13 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McConaughey recalled being pulled over while crossing into Mexico late at night. He said he was prepared for a difficult situation until he mentioned Lopez and their 2001 movie The Wedding Planner.
According to McConaughey, the officers recognized him after he pointed to himself and asked whether they knew Lopez or had seen the film. He said the mood changed quickly, the group took pictures together, and he was allowed to leave.
McConaughey also said other movies have helped him in everyday life. He joked that The Lincoln Lawyer was “big in Cleveland” and that Sahara has worked with highway patrol officers in Oregon, while Tiptoes has not yet been useful.
