Maricopa underpass lighting project cost $382,794, city records show

Maricopa’s new programmable LED lighting system at Mercado Street and Edwards Avenue cost $382,794, according to documents provided by the City of Maricopa and reported by InMaricopa.

The total includes installation, electrical infrastructure and traffic control tied to the $1.136 million Edwards Avenue Underpass capital improvement project. The proposal listed $144,155 for the Edwards Avenue side and $238,639 for the Mercado Street lighting work, including $12,500 for traffic control.

City officials said the project also involved underground electrical work, conduit, wiring, power service and lighting controls. Communications and Cultural Services Director Quinn Konold said the city needed added lighting after extending Edwards Avenue beneath the overpass.

Instead of using a standard lighting setup, the city chose programmable LEDs that can be used for holidays, community celebrations and awareness campaigns. The display first appeared ahead of Independence Day in red, white and blue, and officials said the colors will change during the year for other special occasions.
