The family of late Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist Gary “Mani” Mounfield has criticised plans for tribute concerts being organised without their consent, according to NME.
The statement came after reports that promoters in Manchester were looking to make future events out of a tribute concert held in Mani’s hometown earlier this year. Organisers had also suggested turning the Manichester idea into a regular annual event.
In a message shared by former Primal Scream bassist Simone Marie Butler, the family said they are still grieving Mani’s death and were upset to learn that his name, memory and legacy were being used to promote events without anyone asking his sons or immediate family first.
The family asked organisers, promoters and venues to stop using Mani’s name, image or likeness to advertise events without express consent. They said any official memorial or tribute events would come later, when the family felt the time was right and after they had been fully sanctioned by Mani’s sons.
Mani, whose real name was Gary Mounfield, died last November at the age of 63. A permanent tribute mural dedicated to him was recently unveiled in Manchester.
