Larry Birkhead is speaking out against the upcoming biopic Trust Me, I’m a Doctor, which focuses on Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, according to E! News. Birkhead, who shares daughter Dannielynn with Anna Nicole Smith, said he and his family were not involved in the production.
In an interview published July 9, Birkhead said he objects to what he called the use of Smith’s life, his own life and his daughter’s life in a movie. He also said he did not think the actress playing Smith fully captured her presence, although he added he does not blame her personally.
Kapoor was charged after Smith’s death in 2007 with conspiracy, excessive prescribing of opiates and sedatives to an addict, and fraudulently obtaining drugs using false names. He was later acquitted on all counts, according to the report.
The film is based on Kapoor’s 2017 memoir, Trust Me, I’m a Doctor: My Life Before, During and After Anna Nicole Smith. It is set to premiere Oct. 16 and stars Kal Penn as Kapoor and Abbie Cornish as Smith.
Birkhead said he believes Kapoor had once promised to step out of the spotlight, but has continued to appear publicly over the years. He added that he has filed a complaint with the California Medical Board and says he will let the process play out.
