Kavinsky said another Weeknd collaboration could have happened “soon”

NME is revisiting comments from the late French producer Kavinsky, who said in 2022 that another collaboration with The Weeknd could have been on the way “soon.” Kavinsky, whose real name was Vincent Belorgey, has died at the age of 50.

Kavinsky and The Weeknd previously worked together in 2013 on a version of “Odd Look.” In the interview, Kavinsky said he had first been introduced to Abel Tesfaye through a friend and said he immediately loved his voice.

He told NME that the two artists had been discussing working together again for a long time. “Something might happen very probably,” he said, adding that it was “happening soon.”

No additional collaboration was released during Kavinsky’s lifetime, and it is not known whether any other material was finished. After news of his death, The Weeknd posted a tribute calling him an inspiration.

Kavinsky was best known for his synthwave sound and for “Nightcall,” which appeared in the film Drive. He later returned with his second album, Reborn, in 2022 and performed “Nightcall” at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
