Julie Andrews says she will not return for the upcoming The Princess Diaries 3, according to E! News. Andrews confirmed that she will not reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi opposite Anne Hathaway, who is returning as Mia Thermopolis.
In an interview with Today.com published Aug. 10, Andrews said, “I’m not going to be in it,” adding that she believes the story is moving in a different direction. She said it is “too late” for her to join the film and that the series should continue with Princess Mia.
Andrews also told InStyle that she considers herself retired from on-camera work. She said the film’s creative team asked her repeatedly over the past year to take part, but she ultimately declined.
Even so, Andrews said she had “a wonderful ride” with the franchise and felt the new film could succeed without her character appearing at her age.
Director Adele Lim said in May that the script is still being developed and that the team is working hard on it, but a release timeline has not been locked in.
