Jesse Michaels Says Operation Ivy Logo Likely Used a Spider-Man Comic as a Reference

Jesse Michaels has confirmed a long-running theory about Operation Ivy’s artwork, saying the band’s jumping-man logo was likely based on a Spider-Man comic image, according to Stereogum.

The frontman shared the explanation on Instagram on Sunday after fans had speculated for years about the resemblance. He pointed to the band’s first use of the image on the 1988 Hectic EP and said it later appeared in silhouette form on the album.

Michaels wrote that the 7-inch version included details such as a face and clothing, and said it appears to have been used as a reference to a December 1987 issue of Marvel Tales. He added that he also owned a book called How to Draw Marvel Comics.

In the post, Michaels said he was 17 at the time and did not remember all the specifics, noting that he was often high or otherwise dissociated then.
