Jennifer Finch of L7 has died at age 59, according to Stereogum. Finch joined the Los Angeles rock band in 1986 as bassist and vocalist and appeared on all five of the group’s original studio albums.
Those records included 1990’s Smell The Magic and 1992’s Bricks Are Heavy, two albums that became important releases of the grunge era. In a statement posted on social media, the band said they were devastated by the loss of their “partner, sister, daughter, and friend” Jennifer Precious Finch.
The statement also said Finch’s influence on music was “seismic” and asked for space to grieve privately. Earlier this week, Finch shared that she had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer, which caused her to miss L7’s fall farewell tour.
According to Stereogum, a GoFundMe started by friends and family quickly exceeded its goal and raised nearly $400,000. Finch was born on August 5, 1966, and also played with Sugar Babydoll, OtherStarPeople, and the Shocker, while working extensively as a music photographer.
