Jay Weinberg says there was a period when he could not legally collaborate with other artists, and that the restriction took a toll on him creatively. In a new interview with Loyal to the Craft, he said he did not have the “legal ability” to play music with other people.
Weinberg explained that music has always felt like a two-way exchange to him, both creating and sharing with others. He said he was still making music in private during that time, but knew it could not be released because of his legal obligations.
“A little part of my creative self, it was dying for sure,” Weinberg said, adding that he has long valued working with people from different backgrounds and disciplines. He said that approach is part of what he is embracing with his current music, where he is acting as the main songwriter and playing most of the instruments before bringing in friends to help finish the songs.
Since leaving Slipknot in 2023, Weinberg has worked on a range of projects, including touring with Suicidal Tendencies, recording with Fuming Mouth, starting the band Portraits of an Apparition, and making his first solo music. He also recently collaborated with the Canadian duo Softcult on “Drown Fountain.”
