Jae Stephens has released “Sugar Trap,” the latest single from her upcoming debut studio album, according to Rolling Stone.
The track is built on Dallas Caton’s bass-heavy production and finds Stephens leaning into a fast, energetic pop sound. In the song, she sings about keeping control in a relationship and recognizing when someone is trying to get closer than she wants.
In a statement, Stephens said the song is about understanding your own power and using it wisely. She added that women can be too quick to place their value in someone else’s hands, and said the song is meant as a reminder that they are always the prize.
Stephens is set to perform on the BMI stage at Lollapalooza on Saturday, Aug. 1. “Sugar Trap” follows her earlier single “Attaboy” and continues the momentum she built with her Sellout EP series.
