The Wilder Institute's Calgary Zoo in Alberta says a 1-year-old grizzly bear escaped from his enclosure briefly Sunday morning before guests arrived, according to UPI Odd News.
Zoo officials said Fitz got out of his habitat around 7:30 a.m., which prompted emergency response protocols. The Calgary Police Service joined the zoo's animal care and security teams in responding to the incident.
Officials later tranquilized Fitz and moved him to a behind-the-scenes bear habitat. The zoo opened shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday, but the Wild Canada area stayed closed until the afternoon while investigators looked into how the bear managed to escape.
Fitz and his brother, Turner, were brought to the zoo after being orphaned in the autumn of 2025, according to the zoo.
