Gracie Abrams opens up about fame, family and her new album

Gracie Abrams is continuing her rise from online songwriter to arena-headlining artist, according to CBS News. The 26-year-old singer, known for her intimate style often described as whisper pop, has landed on Billboard charts, appeared in Chanel campaigns and recently graced the cover of Vogue.

In the interview, Abrams said she did not always feel comfortable performing, even though she loved writing songs. She said sharing her music once felt physically frightening, but she eventually began posting songs online and earned her first record deal by 2019.

Her career gained more momentum during the pandemic, when she performed her first tour over Zoom from her bedroom. By 2022, she was opening for Olivia Rodrigo and then Taylor Swift, and she said performing on Swift's Eras Tour felt unreal. Abrams said Swift encouraged her to keep writing, especially when she would rather sit with difficult feelings.

Abrams also discussed the attention that comes with having parents who work in entertainment. Her mother is executive Katie McGrath and her father is filmmaker J.J. Abrams, and she said she recognizes that her background has given her advantages. Rather than avoid the subject, she said she has embraced it, including on her new album, Daughter From Hell, which is out Friday and includes a title track written as a love song for her mother.

She told CBS News that her upcoming tour will feature songs written in a quiet Manhattan park she calls a secret garden. Abrams also reflected on fame's uncertainty, saying her goal is longevity rather than a brief burst of attention.
