Animal Collective’s Geologist, whose real name is Brian Weitz, has announced a new album called The Sirens, according to Pitchfork. The record is due out October 16 on Outside Time.
The music was created in 2024 at visual artist Kyle Simon’s Farrington Observatory in Joshua Tree. According to the album’s liner notes quoted by Pitchfork, the setup used a telescope fitted with optical sensors and light-sensitive detectors to turn light from celestial objects into control signals for Weitz’s modular synthesizer rig.
Those signals were generated from light gathered from stars, the moon, and planets, and then used to shape elements such as pitch, filter, and rhythm in real time. Pitchfork notes that the album comes from a single composition recorded through this process.
The Sirens is Geologist’s third album of 2026, following January’s Can I Get a Pack of Camel Lights? and the May release Croz Boyce, a collaboration with Avey Tare. Pitchfork also says Tare and Geologist are set to begin a tour next month, with a September 8 show scheduled in Asheville, North Carolina.
