Dhani Harrison and longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich have formed a new band called Dragonflies and released its first single, “Slower,” according to NME.
The song is the opening track from the pair’s self-titled debut album, which is set for release on September 18 through Dark Horse Records/BMG. The label was originally founded by Harrison’s father, George Harrison, in 1974.
According to NME, “Slower” features tape loops, layered percussion and Harrison’s vocals, with a sound that leans toward hazy, trip-hop-inspired textures. It also arrives with a hand-drawn psychedelic video directed by Bristol animator RUFFMERCY.
Harrison and Godrich have known each other for years, but they began working together more directly after Harrison reached out during the pandemic for advice on music that later became part of his 2023 solo album, “Innerstanding.” Godrich then invited him to his studio in Brixton, where the new songs were built quickly without a fixed plan.
The duo said the album was influenced by artists including Beth Gibbons, David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and they described its sound as “earthbound space rock,” according to NME.
