Billie Eilish showed a dramatic new look while filming The Bell Jar in Toronto on Aug. 2, according to E! News. On set, the singer was seen playing Esther Greenwood, the film’s lead character based on Sylvia Plath’s novel.
For the role, Eilish wore a 1950s-inspired outfit that included a short-sleeved red sweater, a blue-and-red grid skirt and pearl earrings. Her hair was changed from its usual dark color to a soft brown and pinned to one side, and her lip color was switched to a bright red shade.
Her casting in the film, which is directed by Sarah Polley, was first reported in March. E! News says Carey Mulligan is also set to play Esther’s mother, Mrs. Greenwood, while Connor Storrie and Ella Beatty are rumored to be part of the cast as well.
The Bell Jar is based on Plath’s 1963 novel and follows 19-year-old Esther as she interns at a women’s magazine after her freshman year of college. According to the source, the story also tracks Esther’s worsening depression and her eventual hospitalization.
The role marks Eilish’s feature film debut, though she previously acted in Donald Glover’s 2023 series Swarm, where she played cult leader Eva.
