Bella Thorne is officially attached to write, direct and star in Spring Breakers 2, according to E! News. The former Disney Channel star has already completed the screenplay for the sequel.
In a statement released Aug. 10, Thorne said the original Spring Breakers was an important cultural touchstone and called the sequel a dream project. She said she is grateful to Chris Hanley and Roberta Hanley for trusting her with the story.
Thorne also said she has long been interested in stories about the raw side of youth culture. She described the new film as a high-stakes ride that will honor the first movie while taking the story in a new direction.
According to the press release, the sequel will follow five girls who head into spring break thinking they are guests, only to find out they are actually targets. Casting director Mary Vernieu will return and launch an international open casting call to find new talent to star alongside Thorne.
The Hanleys are returning as producers and said they are excited about Thorne’s vision for the project.
